Lost Keys (for Judy)

Lost keys

Missed appointments, confused
Following some directions

No sleep
Still no sleep, no sleep

Her dear father lost
To dementia just
This past January

Lost keys

Who is she without her
Memories? Who am I?
Who are we?

Today, her doctor said that it sounds
Like age, not
Disease.
Don’t worry. Take these

Sleep. Get some sleep.

Lost keys

She came home and cooked a turkey
With dressing, and filled our house
With memories of moms and dads
Kids and laughter and warmth

Our hands, together held in thanks
around the table. So much thanks.

She knew then that she had found
Something so important

Dreams in some deep sleep
What is gone      What remains

Lost keys
