Free Thing of the Week: Wiki Loves Monuments

It’s the largest photography competition in the world but you’ve probably never heard of it. And it’s all for freedom.

With over 200,000 images submitted, Wiki Loves Monuments is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest photo competition around. Thousands of people enter it. Why? Just to give away their work for the greater good.

All the images submitted to Wiki Loves Monuments are donated to the Wikimedia Commons, where users from anywhere may use them freely.

As human beings continue their quest to ruin everything, having beautiful and sublime photographs of the better parts of our selves and our histories becomes increasingly important, and so the Wiki Loves Monuments competition itself becomes increasingly important.

Here are the winners of this year’s competition, which contains some truly lovely work.
