To Have Not and Have

He lunges onto our bus
Then plunges his hand deep
Into the Metro mask dispenser
Pulls out a fistful wad
Of disposable protectors
Turns, squint-eyed, at fellow travelers
Proclaims
“These are mine”
As if daring any to take issue with his assertion
And when he throws one down like a gauntlet
Not one accepts his challenge
