That January I’d had an awakening.
The eyes of my heart opened.
Now I was enjoying the spring.

Walking through the farmer’s market
on a cool Saturday morning
I noticed a man lifting
oranges from their pyramid
and dropping them
into his shoulder-bag.

My eyes couldn’t leave him.
the way he walked, stood,
picked up oranges
—such poise.

My Master’s words
came to mind:
spirituality is poise.

Approaching the man, I shouted
“You’ve seen God!”
and then to anyone in earshot:
“ He’s seen God!”

Pivoting toward me, he quietly said,
“You’re trying too hard”
and turned back to his oranges.
