We are gathering to celebrate the installation of a community memorial to Tacoma’s Nihongo gakko, the Japanese Language School. But some of us may also be grieving the Tacoma with a thriving Nihonmachi. Some of us may grieve the loss of the Tacoma that once was, and even the Tacoma that could have been.
“When we tell stories, if we tell them well, our audience can’t help but imagine themselves in our shoes. That’s what story does, it creates a shared experience.”
