Call it War — Hobbes Did

Call it competition
but unities create
complex states, resist
disenabling. The man
lost control (which happens
when the body politic
has grip of the police state).
The group must ensure safety
if it wishes to survive,
otherwise explode, or choke
to death. Community,
pursuing the interest
of the whole, must feel just,
so it glows, makes line shine.
Alongside a severed limb,
it can flourish. Amputation
and amputee damaged
beyond circumstances. Endure
living on roots and water.

(Erasure from William Gass’s introduction to Auguste Rodin by Rainier Maria Rilke)

Pamela Hobart Carter loves Seattle as much for its water and mountains as for its bustle and creativity. She explores the Emerald City daily while walking her dog. Carter used to be a teacher who wrote on the side. Now she is a writer who teaches on the side.
